Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued invitations to apply (ITAs) in the most recent Express Entry draw.
In this Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-specific draw, 763 candidates were invited.
To be eligible, candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 690.
Today's draw is the first of August and follows an exceptional number of Express Entry draws in July. During that month, IRCC issued over 25,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) across nine separate draws.
July saw the highest number of Express Entry draws since the system's inception in 2015, representing a notable rebound from June, which had only one draw.
Four of July's draws were category-based selections. Among these, two focused on candidates with French language proficiency, with the July 18 draw featuring the lowest CRS score of the month at 400.
The other two category-based draws targeted candidates in healthcare and trade occupations.
Of the remaining five draws, two were program-specific for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and three were for Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates. The highest CRS score of the month was for PNP candidates on July 2, set at 739.
The increased number of program-specific draws after a year of primarily category-based and general draws demonstrates IRCC's commitment to prioritizing domestic candidates for permanent residency. This move aligns with the department’s goals of reducing temporary residency and meeting its permanent resident admissions targets.

What is Express Entry?
Introduced by IRCC in 2015, Express Entry is an application management system designed to select economic immigration candidates who are most likely to successfully integrate into Canada’s economy and workforce.
It uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to manage applications from three programs: the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP).
Candidates are evaluated and ranked based on factors such as age, occupation, education, language ability, and work experience. Each factor contributes to a candidate’s overall CRS score, with those having the highest scores being more likely to receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency.
What is Category-Based Selection?
Category-based selection rounds were introduced in May 2023 to more precisely target Express Entry candidates who meet specific needs in the workforce or help achieve demographic goals.
IRCC identified six categories based on consultations with stakeholders:
Healthcare occupations
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions
Trades occupations (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, contractors)
Transport occupations
Agriculture and agri-food occupations
French-language proficiency
The 2023 Express Entry year-end report revealed that candidates in the STEM category received the most ITAs throughout the year (32,111), followed by French-language candidates (15,812). However, an Access to Information Request suggests that French-speaking candidates are expected to receive the most ITAs in 2024.
