IRCC Grants 1,000 ITAs in Third Express Entry Draw of the Week

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the latest Express Entry draw.

A total of 1,000 ITAs were issued in a category-based selection for candidates with French language proficiency.

To be eligible, candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 444.

This marks the third Express Entry draw of the week. Earlier, the IRCC invited 1,613 candidates with Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations, requiring a minimum CRS score of 743. Additionally, a draw on October 9 invited 500 candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) with a minimum score of 539.

Before this week, the last Express Entry draw took place on September 19, inviting 4,000 CEC candidates with a minimum CRS score of 509. This was a slight increase from the previous CEC draw on August 27, which had a minimum score of 507.

In recent months, IRCC has reduced the frequency of category-based selection draws. The last such draw, for healthcare occupations, took place on July 5. In contrast, CEC draws have become more frequent over the summer, with 21,800 ITAs issued to CEC candidates since July. This aligns with IRCC’s strategy to increase "domestic" draws and reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada, while also aiming to meet its permanent resident targets.

Today’s draw is the third of October. In comparison, last year, IRCC held four draws in October, inviting 9,173 candidates.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an immigration application management system launched in 2015 by IRCC to select candidates for economic immigration programs that address urgent labor shortages.

Candidates applying to one of the three programs managed by Express Entry—the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class (CEC)—are evaluated using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which assigns points based on factors like work experience, age, language proficiency, education, and occupation. Additional points can be earned for factors like having a spouse or partner, having a sibling in Canada, or work/education experience in Canada. The higher a candidate's CRS score, the greater their chances of receiving an ITA in a draw.

Category-based Selection

In May 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection draws to target candidates who can fill urgent labor gaps in specific sectors. These draws focus on six categories:

  • Healthcare

  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) professions

  • Trades

  • Transport

  • Agriculture and Agri-food

  • French language proficiency

These category-based draws typically have lower CRS cut-off scores compared to general or program-specific draws. However, candidates must still be in the Express Entry pool, and having a higher CRS score remains an advantage.
