Employers who are looking for Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) are now facing new advertising protocols.

Starting September 2025, employers who wish to hire LMIA-based jobs are required to go through the “Direct Apply” on Canada’s National Job Bank as a part of the advertisement process to be applicable for a positive LMIA. All applications must be reviewed on the Job Bank through the Direct Apply function by employers to eliminate chances of LMIA application rejection.

This has created stricter measures for employers as prior to such regulations, employers were only obligated to post their roles on Job Bank for no less than four consecutive weeks. Now employers are required to accept and review all resumes presented through this method.

Furthermore, employers not only have to follow the Direct Apply procedure but they also have to submit documents, such as linking candidates to their preferred application portal.

Nonetheless, there are still some LMIA-based jobs that remain unaffected, exempt from certain advertising requirements Jobs such as:

  • Academic Visitors and Research Scholars
  • In-Home Caregivers
  • Designated Roles in the Entertainment Industry
  • Camp counsellors

This process has lowered time consumption for applicants, due to the termination of having to operate multiple websites to create a new account for each employer’s different portal in hopes to apply for a job opportunity. Ultimately, job seekers have an easier time navigating their way through with the addition of the new rules for LMIA.
